Description

Animal Description: Baryonyx walkeri is a medium-sized piscivorous theropod dinosaur from the Early Cretaceous period, England. It was discovered by amateur fossil hunter William J. Walker in 1983 based on a huge claw he had found while digging. It lived 130 to 125 million years ago in the swamps of Cretaceous England. The jaws of Baryonyx are similarly shaped to the modern Gharial; they were used for snatching fish out from the water like a heron. The most notable feature of the animal is the huge claw on its hand. It may have been used to hold the fish it caught still while it ate, or it may have assisted it in snatching up the first like a bear. An adult Baryonyx can grow up to 30 feet long and weigh up to 2 tons.

History with InGen/Masrani: Despite American Dinosaurs being the most popular, InGen knew that marketing would be much easier if they were to include dinosaurs from all over the world. Because of this, they collected a small amount of mosquito filled amber from many major countries. Enough pieces of amber collected from Barremian rock deposits in England was found to create a mostly intact strand of DNA from the species Baryonyx walkeri. 5 individuals were successfully cloned sometime between 1986 and 1990 and were expected to be in the park by the time of its opening. A special paddock designed from the species would have included a river stocked with fish for it to eat. It would have shared its paddock with Dilophosaurus, whether these two species would have been compatible or not was not answered by the closing of the park. No records show any individuals actually being there at the time of the 1993 incident however.

Baryonyx reportedly did not do well on Sorna despite a lack of competition in its niche due to Masrani Global being unable to acquire any specimens for the opening of the park. It was not one of the original eight species in the park and DNA reserves collected from Sorna were incomplete, leading to a hiatus of the species being successfully recreated until 2010, where they were incorporated into the Cretaceous Cruise attraction along with most of the park’s other carnivorous clones.

DNA makeup: Due to its relation with the other successfully cloned theropods, InGen scientists filled in much of the Baryonyx genome with the already successfully cloned Velociraptor antirrhopus DNA, which means Varanus albigularis albigularis and Pan troglodytes would be present as well. Due to the superficial resemblance to the animal, Alligator mississippiensis was also an incredibly large factor in completing the Baryonyx genome.

Behavior: Baryonyx are generally docile unless starved of their natural food source or cornered. They were housed in their own paddock along the Cretaceous Cruise attraction where they are commonly seen fishing near the riverside. Baryonyx will grab one of the Scheenstia mantelli stocked in the river with its jaws like a modern egret, and then they will proceed to swallow the fish whole headfirst. If the fish is too big, the animal will then rip the fish apart with its claws. The thrill of seeing this makes the Cretaceous cruise one of the most popular attractions in Jurassic World. Baryonyx are mostly solitary and generally avoid other members of its species except during breeding season.

Sexual Dimorphism: There is no sexual dimorphism observed in the cloned Baryonyx.

Life Cycle: After breeding the female will lay a dozen or so eggs and bury them in rotting plant material. She will protect her nest under all costs, which can cause problems with Baryonyx ignoring their shocking implants and straying past the invisible fences to attack kayakers. To prevent this, Jurassic World staff collects all Baryonyx eggs to be raised in the hatchery.
